Connecting the Lonely Profession Reflection

Connecting the Lonely Profession

This article is talking about how teachers are behind closed doors most of the time. They do not interact with all of their colleagues on a daily basis, but rather just with their students.Teachers that leave this profession say that isolation is one of their reasons. With all of this new technology, teachers are able to communicate on the internet through blogs and other sources to exchange thoughts and ideas. Teachers themselves are always learning, and they do this by communicating with other teachers. Teachers are collaborating projects for their students. Teachers and students are not connecting to blogs to post and create ideas for everyone. Students are all connected and can share their own ideas online and outside of the classroom. And other teachers across the nation can have access to these blogs to use in their own classroom and even share their own ideas on how to improve it. Students love using the internet, they get invested in it. It is an every day thing for them so why not utilize it in our own classrooms?

  1. I agree with your question; why don't teachers utilize the internet in their classrooms to connect with other teachers or for students to utilize by connecting to other students or using the internet as a learning tool? I think teachers are so use to doing things on their own that they forget how helpful it can be to work as a team, just because your job is to a certain grade and subject doesn't mean you can't offer helpful criticism. Offering different teaching techniques can be helpful in any subject, also in some grades the teachers in each subject share the students, so they might be able to say what helps that student focus verses what doesn't.

  2. There are a variety of reasons why educators are not using the web environment that the digital natives that sit before them do. Is it possible that students and teachers can work in a dynamic environment that utilizes different learning styles or teaching approaches depending on the task? Simply applying technology is clearly not the answer. Working and collaborating with other professionals can help the design of this learning environment in your classroom.

  3. It clearly is important that we as educators use technology in a way that is productive and not just use it for the sake of it. However if a teacher really wants to collaborate with others and not be isolated it does not take that much effort during a free period to just talk to older teachers who have more experience and get their input.

  4. I agree that their is no reason why technology & the internet should not be used in the classroom. We have all seen the isolation that takes place in the teaching profession, but the Web 2.0 environment allows us to bridge that gap between co-workers and find a support system abroad that we are not getting at our school! I agree with Matt as well that while yes we should all be implementing technology into our classroom, it would be counterproductive to use technology for the sake of using it.

  5. "Students love using the internet, they get invested in it." Perfectly said. Students become excited when it comes to bringing technology in the classroom or even going into the computer lab. They are in a generation when technology is the main resource and used on a daily basis. There is no reason for the Web not to be utilized in the classrooms today as long as there is proper supervision and instruction given to the students; this can create a "room" full of ideas.
